Artists corner, Nov 07

Continuing our series featuring local artists and their work, this month we meet Al Maury

If you are a fan or collector of modern art, a visit to a treasure trove of an atelier, “Artcande”, in
Montesquieu des Alberes, an exquisitely pretty village at the foot of the Alberes not far from
Le Boulou, is “de rigeur”.
Al Maury has lived and painted in various locations in the world, notably Amsterdam where
he worked for the Rijksmuseum, Brussels where he had an exhibition at Nato; Portugal, the
USA and Madagascar where he exhibited in the residence of the US Ambassador; and has now found
peace and inspiration in this charming Catalan village where he paints outstandingly “unique” works of art together with producing tantalising sculptures.
Each piece is unique representing a mixing of cultures and a touch of humour. They would be
equally at home in Dubai, New Mexico, Catalunya or London and the sculptures, in particular, are
a wonderful gift for “the man who has everything”.
Alain works in exotic woods, raffia, hand made papers “Antemoro” , oil on canvas, acrylics – a
real cornucopia of materials to produce a “Polygenesique” collection of both geometric and
surrealistic styles and his more recent work would grace the most “decoratif” contemporary
cutting edge home or business.
Al’s work can be seen on his website but, better yet, visit his atelier “Artcande” right opposite the
Mairie in Montesquieu des Alberes. His work studio is closed on Saturday mornings when he
visits Ceret market to connect with life and meet up with friends, but he is painting in Montesquieu
most other days, including Sunday, from 10h until 12h30 and from 14h until 18h30. Al speaks
French, English and Dutch and is always delighted to receive visitors.
Why not make a visit to Al Maury’s atelier on a Tuesday morning when a wonderful fresh
vegetable stall also comes to town!
